Weekly Wellness Blog: Wednesday, March 25th 2020

Weekly Wellness Blog: Wednesday March 25th

Even though the Wellness Blog is always virtual, this week it feels especially so. How are you doing after your first two days of virtual learning? Most of you, who I have spoken with, feel a bit overwhelmed and out of their element. Many of us feel like we are sitting in front of our screens too much and that it is hard to "turn it off". With all of the dings and pings from our various online sources, it can be challenging to balance our days. But, our community is so supportive and we are all in this together! Do your very best to honor your office hours and take breaks. If you are feeling especially down or overwhelmed, please reach out to a friend, a counselor, or your Wellness Coordinator! Remember, we are together...apart.

If you are like me and miss your routine & to-do lists, here is a little checklist that you should attempt to conquer everyday that we are on virtual learning.

  • Read
  • Eat Healthy (or just Delicious ;))
  • Stretch
  • Get Some Sunshine
  • FaceTime a Friend
  • Connect with Our Community*
  • Clean(and think about how much you appreciate & miss your maid!)
  • Move**
*We currently have two open community WhatsApp support Groups ... check below for details on how to join!

**Some people in our community are taking ample dancin' breaks ... check out below for how to join us for virtual Zumba on Friday!

Suggestions!

Usually, we like to post upcoming events and suggestions. Our biggest suggestion this week is to practice social distancing. Don't forget to think about your mental health and wellness. Take breaks from your virtual workload, get some sunshine when you can, and reach out to friends via Skype or Zoom! Join us for virtual Zumba or hunker down with a good book, check out the suggestions below...

Any other suggestions that you may have for your fellow colleagues? Drop a comment on this blog or email Keeley to be featured in next week's blog!

My friend, Enrique, is offering free virtual Zumba classes! He is currently based in Malaysia but he is looking forward to offering a free class at a time that works for us in Chennai! Please use this Sign Up Sheet to vote for a time that might work for your schedule on Friday, March 27th. He is available at either 11am, 5pm, or 6pm Chennai Time on Friday! Please sign up if you are interested and I will get back to you with the chosen time and the details on how to log on!

Weekly Wellness Blog: Wednesday, March 11th 2020

During these stressful times of uncertainty, it is more important than ever to focus on yourself, your health, and your wellbeing. Wash your hands to your favorite tune - as long as it lasts at least twenty seconds! Offer your friends a squirt of your favorite scent of hand sanitizer (Bath & Body Works has some delicious smells!) Get some rest and focus on some "me-time" that involves calm and independent activities.

In this week's blog, you will see some Spring Break suggestions from Priya about travel and from Babs about reading! You will be reminded of some upcoming events on campus and in Chennai. Please have a look through this blog and do not forget to comment about more content that you would like to see shared through this platform.

Mindful March

Can you believe that it is already March? Time surely flies when you're having fun! As a school community, you may have heard the buzz around "mindfulness". Several members in our community will soon be starting mindfulness course(s) and sparking more conversations on this topic across campus.

Have you heard of Mindful March? Action for Happiness has created a calendar of small things that you could do each day to be more mindful. Taking small steps creates habits, and what better habit to start than becoming more mindful?

Check out the calendar below, which appropriately says "Start today by appreciating that you're alive and have a body" for Wednesday, March 4th. This calendar is something you could do independently, with your family, and/or with your students. (Hey, World Language Teachers, they even have calendars in different langauges! You can visit www.actionforhappiness.org to download your very own Mindful March calendar).

An Athena Update
On Monday, February 24th, Shannon's daughter, Athena, underwent heart surgery and now she is recovering nicely. The Zirkle-Prabhakar family are finally at their home in Maryland resting and recovering with their adorable twins.
