Why Happiness is Important

Aristotle once said, “Happiness is the meaning and purpose of life.” The fundamental reason why happiness is so important is that it’s extremely vital to our own goals in life and can help us achieve many other cherished personal ambitions and goals. Also, by being happy, we have the potential to change many other lives just by being ourselves.
Although we may sometimes neglect to cultivate our own happiness, feeling happy is intrinsically important. If we are happy it has added knock-on effects and benefits. These include us becoming more compassionate and feeling healthier both physically and emotionally. We become more creative, witty, energetic and fun to be around and it can also lead us to become more financially successful.
The key to happiness is that we look for it every day. That we share it with those we love and those we meet. By seeking for it and spreading it, we will make an enormous impact not only for ourselves, and our families, but society as a whole.  Read the article below on how you can find happiness. You do not have to be new to the city for it to apply to you.

Operation Appreciation
Appreciation is recognition of the magnitude, significance, value, or quality of things or people. Appreciation is one of the basic human needs. An employee responds to the appreciation that his higher authority expresses by recognizing his good job because it positively confirms that his work is being valued. Here is a perfect opportunity for you to show your gratitude to the staff at AISC. You are invited to participate in this tradition of AISC that was started a couple of years ago. All you need to do is sign up and bake, make or even buy treats for the staff at AISC. You may also sign up to just be the delivery coordinator and help us deliver the treats.

Please fill out the form to share your interest. We will send in a reminder closer to the date as well. Sarah Sahr and I look forward to your enthusiasm and participation towards operation appreciation.

Sustainable Ganapathy Idol Making Workshop
August -31 | 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Venue- Makers Tribe
Address: 391A, 3rd Floor Nehru Nagar, IGP Bus Stop, OMR Land Mark - Opposite to Hotel Turyaa, Above Titan Showroom, Chennai, Tamil Nadu 600096

Hi Makers!

Ganesh Chathurthi is a day to worship the soil in the form of an idol of Lord Ganapathy. In most regions, this is either before or after the monsoon, just ahead of the sowing season. India being a primarily agricultural country for centuries, most traditions surround the prayer to the earth that provides us with food.

In today's urban scenario, we use fuel to transport lake bed clay from a rural landscape to the city and then immerse the idol in the sea. This is just a blatant form of soil erosion. Clay doesn't belong in the sea. Neither do paints, plastic, glitter, thermocol, garlands and loads of other trash. If you are someone who cares about the environment, you will probably look for an Eco-friendly Ganesha. Instead of getting mixed up in the -whirlpool of consumerism and choosing a well-marketed expensive product, let's explore what "Eco-friendly" really means and make our own truly ZERO WASTE Ganesha idol, not with the clay of course.

In this workshop, you will learn to sculpt an idol out of red garden soil with the use of different natural binding elements. You will get to understand the materials, connect with them and experiment to see how the different ingredients work in different proportions. You will also be making Eco-friendly umbrellas and painting the idols with natural colors. This workshop is not merely about putting your sculpting skills to test. It will be focused on the knowledge of materials, which will allow you to experiment with different proportions and ingredients by yourself in the future and also spread the knowledge to others.

This is a totally hands-on workshop. Get ready to make your hands dirty.
Avoiding light-colored or high-quality clothing is recommended.
If possible, bring a basket, or bag with a flat base to carry home your Ganesha safely.

What will actually happen there?
You will be taught to sculpt with soil using different binding agents and finish the Ganesha idol with natural colors.

What if I'm not good at sculpting or painting?
The beauty lies in your effort to make an earth-friendly idol.

Everyone will get an individual Ganesha?
Yes, everyone can sculpt and take home their own unique Ganesha. Or you can choose to sculpt anything you want.

Should I bring any materials?
No, but it would be convenient for you to make arrangements to carry home your Ganesha safely.

Highlights this week:

Happy Birthday Madras

A city deserves to celebrate its birthday. And Madras, that is Chennai certainly deserves it.
So a small group of people who love this city launched a unique celebration in 2004. The founding day of Madras is considered to be August 22, 1639. It was on that day, in that year, that a sliver of land, where Fort. St. George stands today, was transacted by the East India Company. The deal was struck by Francis Day, his ‘dubash’ Beri Thimmappa, and their superior, Andrew Cogan, with the local Nayak rulers. It is believed that this deal was made on August 22, 1639.
Out of the fort, grew settlements. Then the villages around it were brought together. And then, the old and new townes linked up. And then we had the city. Today, Chennai stands tall for a variety of reasons. Education, healthcare, IT, history, tourism, auto industries, movies, etc. And yes, it also has its warts. Madras Day celebrates the city.
Madras Day was an idea that three people put together – the city’s famed historian, S. Muthiah, journalist Sashi Nair, and publisher Vincent D’ Souza. Later, they have been joined by three others – senior journalist and editor Sushila Ravindranath, journalist and website entrepreneur Revathi R and entrepreneur and writer-historian V. Sriram.
Madras Day focuses on the city, its history, it's past and its present and the core team motivate communities, groups, companies, and campuses in the city to host events that celebrate the city.
Heritage walks, school exchange programs, talks and contests, poetry and music and quiz, food fests and rallies, photo exhibitions and bike tours . . . . these and more are the ways in which the city is celebrated. In order to enlarge participation, Madras Day has been expanded to create the Madras Week.
In 2019, MADRAS WEEK will be celebrated from August 18 to 25. MADRAS DAY, as always, is August 22.

The city has been home to not just natives but to people from various regions from across India who migrated and made this wonderful city their home!

The Night Owl Giving Tree - from Deborah Lee
A message from Deborah Lee: The Night Owl Giving Tree was started in 2014 by AISC teachers who wanted to give back to our host city by giving donations to some of the homeless around Chennai.
Typically, it has looked like delivering bundled packages of veg food, water, toiletries, blankets, and clothing to those in need. We have done 9 deliveries since 2014. A couple of us who are still around from when the deliveries started would like to revive these efforts this year. If you are interested in joining us for an informal brainstorming session as we get things up and running, please come to the i-Hub next Friday (August 23) at 4:45pm. Aziz and I would love to see you there! If this time doesn't work for you but you would like to be kept in the loop, please let me know and I will be sure to send out updates as we move forward. Thank you! - Deborah Lee (ldeborah@aischennai.org)
